Brief Biography:
David Butler taught music in the East Cleveland
and Columbus (OH) public schools and at the
College of Charleston (SC)
before joining the
School of Music
at the
Ohio State University.
He retired from OSU in 2003 and now resides in in the beautiful town
of Sedona, Arizona.
His research interests include musical perception and cognition,
aural training pedagogy, and aspects of tonality.
Butler has presented research papers at numerous conferences in the U.S.,
Europe, and Asia, and his articles and reviews have appeared in Music
Perception, The Psychology of Music, Journal of Music Theory, Music Theory
Spectrum, in theory only, Indiana Theory Review, Perception & Psychophysics,
and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Memory and Learning.
He has served on the editorial boards of a number of journals and is currently
consulting editor for
Music Perception
and editor of
College Music Symposium.
His book,
The Musician's Guide to Perception and Cognition,
was released in 1992 by Schirmer Books.
